1974 tavaszán nyolcadikosként azt a házi feladatot kaptuk magyar nyelv és irodalom órán, hogy találjunk magunknak egy kedves verset, tanuljuk meg kívülről, aztán minden órán hárman-négyen előadhatjuk. Egyetlen kitétel volt, ne Petőfihez és Aranyhoz nyúljunk vissza.
Én akkor elballagtam a könyvesboltba és kemény 18 forintért megvettem a „Mai magyar költők antológiája” című kötetet. Merész választás volt. Már csak azért is, mert a XX. század művészete, legyen az bármilyen válfaja, nem igazán tudott megfogni engem.
A kötet apró termete ellenére is majd 500 oldalas, Ágh Istvántól Zelk Zoltánig éppen 100 költő kapott benne helyet. Lapozgattam-lapozgattam, aztán egyszer csak megakadt a szemem Végh György: Kíváncsiság című versén. Első olvasásra megfogott, a harmadik olvasás után pedig szinte kívülről fújtam az egészet. Minden sorát, minden gondolatát mintha én magam fogalmaztam volna meg.

mert érdekelne, hogy ki és miféle
az, akié a szájam és hajam,
hogy ki az, ki a szívem bitorolja,
aki használja lábam és kezem,
ki minden szervem elkoptatja sorra,

Vajon tudnék-e lenni jó barátja?
Irigyelném-e titkon életét?
Mit váltana ki belőlem halála?
Örülnék-e vagy könnyet ejtenék?
Jó volna egyszer más ember szívével
érezni ezt halálos komolyan.

pártatlanul megnézni önmagam.
